CIMS is glad to announce the organization of the third edition of the International Summer School entitled: Basi Neuroanatomiche e Fisiopatologiche presented by prof. Giuseppe Anastasi with prof. John Povlishock from Virginia Commonwealth University. The International Summer school is based on an interdisciplinary and inter-comparison of modern methods of teaching and biomedical research in the field of neuroscience.
This program is one of the two co-funding received by University of Messina from the Ministry of Education, University and Research (MIUR) - International Interuniversitary Cooperation Program 2010 - with foreign universities. The projects have been awarded at third and fourth place ranking for the organization of two International summer schools 2011, with the mobility of students and faculty from Italy and USA in collaboration with the Virginia Commonwealth University, thanks to the long and intense collaboration initiated by the Centre for Integrated Studies of the Mediterranean (CIMS). The projects were selected and classified in relation to the quality of mobility, the use of tools of transparency and the degree of internationalization.

The course is offered in two sessions for an international class of 20 residents from both Virginia Commonwealth University and University of Messina. During the session held at the University of Messina (October 22 - November 6, 2011) Prof. John Povlishock from Virginia Commonwealth University has held the following lessons:
- Gross Brain and Sectional Anatomy
- Meninges and Blood Supply (including the BBB)
- Cranial Nerves
Prof. Francesco Tomasello, University of Messina Rector, held a neurosurgery lesson:
- III ventricole: General overview and Neurosurgical Approaches
Prof. Giuseppe Anastasi held Anatomy lessons:
- Affrenet Pathways: Thalamus and Cortical Circuits
- Motor System: Pyramidal and Extra- Pyramidal Pathways

Prof. J. T. Povlishock comments that the course is an intellectual, social and clinical interesting experience that exposes participants to an unique reality.

The second session was hold at the Department of Anatomy and Neurobiology Medical College of Virginia Campus of Virginia Commonwealth University from March 4 to March 15, 2012.
